12 Best Resorts on St. Thomas

The most developed of the three main islands making up the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), St. Thomas is home to a range of excellent resorts that cater to luxury and budget travelers alike, as well as to families and couples.

St. Thomas is a popular cruise ship port and, as such, has more to do away from your resort than its sister islands of St. Croix and St. John — there are posh shopping malls here, as well as golf courses and gourmet restaurants.

Because the USVI is a U.S. territory, Americans do not need a passport to visit this part of the Caribbean. St. Thomas is also home to the territory's capital, Charlotte Amalie, and a number of resorts are clustered around the town.

St. Thomas is also home to beautiful white-sand beaches, sparkling turquoise ocean, and underwater coral gardens to explore on a diving or snorkeling adventure. Let the stress melt away as you soak up the multi-faceted warmth of the Caribbean at one of the best resorts on St. Thomas.

1. The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

The rooms and suites are beautifully decorated with high-quality linens on comfy beds and all come with ocean views and terraces or balconies. There is also a club level with its own lounge and dining area.

The property works well for couples and families alike. If you are traveling with the children, the Ritz has a Kids Club that offers supervised activities for children ages 4-12 during the day and also in the evening so parents can have a romantic dinner or just some alone time. Babysitting is also available here.

The Ritz has a slew of amenities on offer as well. Book the Lady Lynsey II, the resort's 60-foot luxury catamaran that can accommodate up to 75 guests. It can be booked for sunset cruises, snorkeling tours, or island-hopping day trips.

There is also a new family swimming pool with a waterslide, ocean-view pool cabanas, a gym, and tennis courts. If you'd rather just sit on the beach, there is a private section for hotel guests with sun loungers and umbrellas.

Grab dinner at one of the four on-site restaurants. The signature dining spot here is Alloro, which serves good Sicilian fare. The resort is about a 30-minute drive from the international airport.

Accommodation: Mafolie Hotel

The Mafolie Hotel is a landmark resort in St. Thomas that first opened in 1952. It is known for being reasonably priced, family-owned, and having some of the best views of any resort on the island.

Set on a cliff looking down at the town, harbor, and sea, the Mafolie does not offer direct beach access, but its panoramic views help alleviate that pain. The grounds are landscaped with tropical foliage and the rooms and public spaces have lots of character.

There are just 22 rooms and suites. All feature island-inspired décor and extra-comfy beds. If you want a microwave or refrigerator in your room, just request it. Rooms come in standard, deluxe, and junior suite configurations.

If you are traveling solo and just want a budget room with access to resort amenities, book the "island's tiniest room" here. It is just 120 square feet but comes with a full bed, air-conditioning, a mini fridge, and a microwave.

On a well-placed deck with views, the swimming pool is the top amenity here. The hotel's house restaurant is also well known on St. Thomas for its fine dining and, you guessed it, more views. It cooks up island fare including lots of locally caught fish.
