When you want to get away — really, really get away — Mauritius makes a great vacation destination. The island, formerly a territory of Britain, Holland, and France, is in the Indian Ocean, more than a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa.
Independent since 1968, this island nation is surrounded by tropical white-sand beaches and lagoons, with inviting turquoise water and gentle surf. You'll also find windy beaches and reef areas with some of the world's best and most consistent kitesurfing.
The beach areas and the surrounding towns are filled with a wide variety of hotel and resort choices. The majority of the brand-name luxury resorts (Shangri-La, Four Seasons, etc.) are in the Beau Champ area on the eastern coast of the island.
You'll find a lot of the mid-range resorts on the northern tip of the island, and budget resorts in various locations, sometimes inland, not directly on the beach.

Experienced travelers to Asia (and Paris, London, and Toronto) know Shangri-La's reputation for extreme luxury, warm personal service, and Asian-inspired food and design elements. The idyllic Shangri-La's Le Touessrok Resort & Spa (one of the largest resorts on the island) occupies its own peninsula on Trou d'Eau Douce Bay on the east coast of the island.
The Shangri-La resort has 200 rooms and suites, along with three beach villas, set in six different beach areas. All the accommodations have ocean views with private terraces or balconies, and some are right on the sand.
Like some other resorts, the Shangri-La has its own remote, lightly developed islet, called Ilot Mangenie. The area has more butler-serviced beach areas, a restaurant, an outpost of the hotel spa, and two 18-hole championship golf courses.
Back at the main resort, the Shangri-La's Chi the Spa has a variety of treatments enhanced by organic, local products and traditions. A range of Asian-inspired mind, skin, and body treatments are available.
When you get hungry, there are five different restaurant options. The resort does something called Dine by Design, where their chef comes to your accommodation and prepares a special dinner per your selections. The Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is an all-villa resort set on its own remote lagoon on the east coast of the island.
Villas range from one to five bedrooms, and all of them include their own private plunge pool, outdoor shower, and sun deck. Premium villas are right on the sand, facing the sea, while standard villas face the gardens.
If you fancy some golf, the Four Seasons has two challenging courses (greens fees are complimentary for guests), one designed by Ernie Els, and another by Bernhard Langer.
There are also excellent water sports to be enjoyed, which are easy to do in the protected lagoon. The resort has a twice-daily complimentary snorkeling excursion enabling guests to explore more of the reef with a guide. The Four Seasons even offers a Marine Discovery Program, which gives guests a chance to learn more about the local environment.

One of three Heritage resorts on the island, the Heritage Le Telfair presents a more refined, small boutique luxury hotel experience. This all-suite beachfront resort has only 158 suites.
Accommodations have a tropical/colonial feel, with inviting wood floors, four-poster beds, and freestanding clawfoot bathtubs. Designed to replicate Mauritian beach homes, they start at garden-view suites and go up through oceanfront suites with patios leading onto the sand. Another Heritage resort property, the Awali Golf & Spa Resort has its own beautiful 18-hole golf course, along with a large spa. While Le Telfair has more of a wellness vibe, the Awali focuses more on the family and on relaxation and activities. It's all-inclusive and has a lot of activities for families and for kids. Two kids up to 12 years old stay free in their parents' room.
There's a baby club, a kids' club, and a teen activity program, with most activities supervised during the day. Guests can take advantage of free resort-wide Wi-Fi and a free shuttle service that will take them to the other Heritage resorts.
Rooms and suites have an African safari vibe, with basic rooms facing the garden and higher-category rooms and suites with ocean views. There are also beachfront suites on the sand and a large, private villa with its own private beach. All the accommodations have furnished balconies or terraces.

It has an Instagram-worthy location, a remote section of beach on the southwest coast of the island. That southwest location also makes it known for especially beautiful sunsets.
The resort is backed with a tall cliff and mountain for which Le Morne is named. There's a line of trees serving to separate the essentially private beach from the resort area. The LUX's luxe beach services, like roving sunglass cleaners, roving face spritzers, and beachside waiters, give you a five-star vacation.
Le Morne has five swimming pools, including a large, free-form lagoon-style pool with a poolside café and waiter service. There's a large spa and even a wellness concierge, who can consult on spa treatments, diet, and excursions.

The Oberoi resort is set amid 20 acres of subtropical gardens on Turtle Bay, a protected marine park. The all-villa accommodations start with luxurious pavilions with thatched roofs. Most non-motorized water sports and activities are all complimentary, and a range of activities, from sailing to swimming with dolphins to golf are all available at an additional charge. There's also a kids' club with daily, organized activities for children.
Bar Bleu is the resort's beach café and lounge, known island-wide for the American pancakes they serve each afternoon. This beachfront resort is also in the Flic-en-Flac area on the central part of Mauritius' western coast.
Rooms and suites are large, with a clean, modern design, and have private furnished balconies or terraces. Deluxe Family Rooms are perfect for families traveling together, as they are two connected rooms with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. One has a king bed; the other two twin-sized beds.
The Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa is a great hotel for families, with a kids' club, a kids' menu in the restaurants, and even a special kids' goodie bag on check-in. It's right on the sand, so you can just walk off your terrace and enjoy the beach.

One of two Sofitel properties on the island, the Sofitel Mauritius L'Imperial Resort & Spa is on the west coast just south of Flic-en-Flac. Opened in 1991, it has undergone several renovations over the years, the most recent of which saw a redo of most of the rooms and suites.
These now mostly boast contemporary Asian décor and make good use of natural materials for a down-to-earth luxe vibe. The beds are super comfy, and most bathrooms feature separate tubs and showers. Many rooms also have ocean views from balconies.
This resort has an impressive open-air lobby space with views down to the main pool and beach beyond. There are two swimming pools. The main pool is the central hub and most of the resort's restaurants surround it. There is a second adults-only pool that is heated. You'll find sun-loungers around both pools as well as at the beach.
Guests can use clear-bottom kayaks and stand up paddleboards for free. Snorkeling equipment is also available. If you need some pampering, head to the spa. In collaboration with L'Occitane, it offers the full range of treatments and has a Jacuzzi.
Finally, there are three restaurants on the grounds. One is a buffet restaurant located next to the pool in the lobby area. Breakfast is served here. There is also a Chinese restaurant and a beachfront restaurant serving international fare.

This mid-range resort focuses on its Mauritius-ness. Instead of providing an Indian, African, French, or Asian style, the Zilwa has indigenous designs, menus, and activities. Even the name Zilwa means "islander" in the local language. The resort is on the eastern side of the northern tip of Mauritius in an area called Calodyne.
You have 214 rooms and suites to choose from, each a bit different and furnished with local crafts. There is also a lot of artwork, both hanging on and painted on the walls themselves. Getting back to that local theme, all the furniture, and even the coconut fiber rugs, are locally made. Some rooms and suites are family-focused, with extra bedrooms and space. Some are great for couples, with private patios and balconies and locations right on the sand.
The Zilwa Attitude has seven different restaurants featuring Creole, Asian, Indian, and European cuisines. If you're doing the all-inclusive, half-board package, there are four restaurants you can select from, so you have a chance to try different cuisines.

If you plan to spend most of your time on the beach and prefer to explore local cuisine without needing a hotel restaurant, a budget resort may be right for you. Mauritius has many budget resorts with clean, basic accommodations. Some may not be right on the sand, but most have their own pool, and locations that allow for local exploration.

This French-managed aparthotel offers modern studio units with stylish, high-spec kitchenettes. It's in the Mon Choisy area, near the west side of the north tip of the island.
Accommodations include garden-view studios, which have kitchenettes and private balconies. There are also sea-view studios, which face the ocean. These have private patios and private sun lounging areas.
This small resort has an ocean view, a saltwater infinity pool, and a private beach-like sand area with sun loungers. There is no real beach at the resort — the coastline has large rocks. The real beach is 10 minutes away.

A great budget Mauritius resort option is Otentic, the island's only eco-tented glamping site.
More than just tents, you stay in hand-crafted tent cabins, raised above the ground, at the foot of a mountain. With a thatched roof and rustic wooden furnishings, each villa-like tent offers a very cool vibe, with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and a full bathroom. Each unit has a double bed and two or three single beds for two adults and up to three children or four adults.
The camp is near the village of Deux Freres in a lesser-visited east coast area of the island. They offer a daily boat shuttle to three of Mauritius' most beautiful beach areas: the islets of Iles aux Cerfs, Ilot Flamand, and Ilot Mangenie. The shuttle takes you to the beach at 9:30 each morning and returns you to the resort at 1pm for lunch.
Activities abound: Right near the camp, you can hike in the forest or go kayaking or stand up paddleboarding in the local river. Mountain biking is also popular. Beach activities are also available as part of the daily excursions.
Otentic has its own restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all Creole-style. Breakfast is included in the nightly rate, and for lunch and dinner, the food is charged prix fixe per meal, including a dessert and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the day.
The camp is about an hour from Port Louis, the island's capital, and about 45 minutes from the airport. They have a camp car for airport pickups and other transportation needs.
